Some two thousand horses reside within a 25km radius of Kilmore. They comprise trotters, gallopers, stud breeding stock, and horses for leisure riding and occasional stock work. The Kilmore racing complex, located to the east of Kilmore, is one of the best equipped country racecourses in Australia. Some local trainers, drivers and riders have achieved fame for themselves and for Kilmore.
Several trainers have their own tracks which they train upon, for the Kilmore track has reached capacity for training. Regular trials are held for trotters and gallopers at the Kilmore racecourse.
Quite a number of local people are also employed on the course during meetings, working in catering, on the gate and in the TAB.
The Kilmore Trackside complex completed in 1999 provides seven day a week meals and is geared up to handle meetings and special events.
There is a major support industry of farriers, vets, saddlers and feed merchants and these employ local staff.
